The film-maker films each shot so coldly, there never really is any sunshine, and everything seems so 's reminiscent of the relationship Harold and Mum have. I'd suggest this movie a million times over. Intimate Relations 1996 Drama Comedy 54 In 1950s England, sailor Harold Guppy arrives in a small seaside town looking for his estranged brother. This movie is sad in its simplicity and we do feel for many of the characters, Harold's brother and wife, Mum's children, Joyce, Mr. Harold Guppy (Graves) is an orphaned merchant marine who winds up in an English coastal town where he. All the way to the end, we pity our Harold as everything falls apart. Synopsis: Fifties family dsyfunction-British style. Harold Guppy (Rupert Graves) moves into the Beasley household as a lodger. It's clear that Harold has a troubled past, but his future is about to get more. Beasley, her meek husband and their teenage daughter, Joyce. After a brief reunion, Harold finds a room for rent in the house of Mrs. We have compassion for him, as he really needs Mum (it's not as if he ever had one growing up), and he can't escape. So here he is again, back in Mum's control. Soon enough Mum has control of him again, saying she'll tell the police that Harold sexually abused Joyce. ![]() They are now regularly sleeping together (with Joyce still in the bed) and Harold needs to get out of the situation. Mum has this psychological control over him and it isn't healthy. Marjorie jumps at the chance to take in a young lodger-Harold Guppy (Rupert Graves). Their relationship is smooth enough until Harold decides he wants to get out. Intimate Relations mixes cold sarcasm with heated emotions. Beasley's (or as he calls her, Mum's) daughter Joyce. This won't be the only time he has such ambitions. ![]() He seems like he's had quite a bit of trouble in his life (he lets us know in a discussion with his brother) and he wants to start fresh. Harold Guppy (Graves) is an orphaned merchant marine who winds up in an English coastal town where he takes rooms with the seemingly respectable Beasleys. Basically, this movie is following Harold Guppy, a man who we want to like but does some pretty despicable things on our road to the ending. The fact that it is based on a true story only adds to it and makes it that much better. I felt I’d come off pretty badly but when we did the scenes, he was lovely, a real gentleman.This movie is brilliant, really it is. On this occasion I was more embarrassed, especially because Rupert is so much younger and so good looking. “You don’t see much of Marjorie, you’ll be glad to know, but I dreaded the sex scenes, as I always do. Julie had equally nice things to say about Rupert: I found two different versions of the film, but alas the same result… There is a lovely documentary about Julie Walters by BBC “Our Julie” (1999) on Youtube divided into 6 parts and it’s really worth to see.īUT!
